Our Little man L - literally.

We had an important milestone last night - for the first time ever little man L weighed in at all of 12 kg (26,5 pounds). Fellow moms will know that this is tiny for a two and a half year old. In fact, he has been small ever since he had a growth slow-down at around 7 months after having two stints in the hospital in just over a month. Born at 2,92kg (6,4 pounds) as a twin at 37 weeks he was anything but small, but somehow he got left behind in the growing department. The difference in size between the twins has become more and more pronounced. At their two year check-up, his weight was still on the 5th percentile with his height at the 10th. A few weeks ago I realized that the height difference between the boys must be about 2cm and his brother weighed in at 2kg more than he did. So I made the appointment to see the Pediatrician for a growth check. I was so worried about him - I Googled (never do that!), I worried.

The doctor weighed and measured, checked and pronounced him healthy. The she added the numbers to his growth chart and what a surprise - his weight is now at the 10th percentile and his height at the 25th percentile. It seems he has grown a lot but little man C definitely had a growth spurt of note - hence the bigger size difference. She also calculated his genetic expected height, which should be above the 75th percentile. His sister is at the 98th percentile in height at present, which is over her expected genetic height, but we have very tall genes in the families. We have therefore decided to give him time to grow until his 3 year check-up and if he has not progressed on the height chart (his weight will be under average because he of his low muscle tone) she will do a bone-age test to determine if he possibly has a younger bone age. His growth chart will then be adapted. If not, we will proceed to growth hormone tests etc. So little boy, please continue to grow! And grow!

  1. Glad to hear he's doing well. Our little one is 5 lbs lighter than his twin brother and we've been ordered to give him one bottle of pediasure a day and we have to come back in the beginning of July for a weight check. Apparently he wasn't on the growth chart anymore for weight.

  6. We've been told our son may need some growth hormone testing too. He's in the 0 percentile or something insane for height and not much better at weight. I seriously think he's weighed the same the last two years.

  10. He's adorable.

Each child has their own path to follow.

Kaylin was born 2kg and even at age 4 and a half she still only weighs 14kg and is a short-shit like her mum. She eats everything in sight so I don't worry too much.

    She's just little.

We have to looked at each of our kids throught different eyes even though we want to treat the all the same.

They're all so different that we have no choice but to treat them all differently.

  12. OH! He is just so so sweet.
I am so glad he has been growing and gaining. That is awesome news.
Perhaps he's just going to be a smaller guy?

  13. Glad he's growing! He could be like my lil sister. My parents are about average, maybe slightly above average height. My maternal grandfather was very tall though and 3 of the 4 of us siblings got it, too. My oldest brother was 6 feet, 6 inches. My 2nd brother is 6'3". I am 6'1"....and then my sister is a measly 5'5"!!! soooo much shorter! we joke that mom ran out of the tall genes before she got to her since we all got a lil bit shorter :-)

My kids, also, are tall...Jacob's always been 97%!! he's like 43" now at just 3.5 years.

  14. I have definitely learned from having twins that all kids are different! That said, I'm glad to hear that L is growing onto his chart. I hope that the testing finds no worries for you and just a "shorter/smaller" path for L to follow.

  16. Oh Sweet Cat, isn't it extra challenging when you have a same-aged sibling to "compare"? Our She-Twin rode the 3% weight curve until age 5 when she moved up to the 10% (where she's remained since). Her brother? 97% height.

Here's hoping your sweet boy grows and grows and stays happy and as the doctor declared, HEALTHY!

Thank you for linking up with Way Back When-eday!
