Obsessions

Every now and again I am totally amazed at how obsessive kids get about a certain topic/ item or something or the other. Mr L is a bit higher on the obsessive scale than most which does contribute it's fair amount of tension in the household, but so be it. We will remember these fondly as time goes by. So in honour of fond memories, let me tell you about the current obsessions:

Mr L is totally tool obsessed. He still adores his drill, screwdrivers and assorted tools they got for Christmas. He also has this thing about the lawnmower and weedeater. He constantly wants to be assured that they are safe in the garage, have their electrical cords with them (kid you not!) and that no crocodiles will eat them. ( the product of a Corcodile hunter episode he watched) Yes, I know it sounds rather entertaining, but it can get to you showing him the lawnmower etc in the garage 10 times a day. In addition, regardless of where we visit he needs to know where their lawnmower is. And mowing the actual lawn can be a tad tiring for us all (total SID kid behaviour). What he wants to be some day is everybody's guess but I would think that saving unsuspecting lawnmowers from crocodiles is high on the list.

Mr C is our little astronomer at the moment. The planets, black holes etc totally intrigues him. He just wants to look at Skywatch on the iPhone (I have so far managed to keep it secret that it is on the iPad too). In addition we get informed a million times a day about how many planets Jupiter is from the sun, and that Keppler is a planet too. That a black hole can eat planets. And so forth and so forth. Cute and rather brainy for a 4 year old, but I tell you, one can only talk so much about planets and stars on that level. At the moment he wants to be an astronaut when he grows up.

The Princess has the very obvious one. Her much anticipated Leappad is the bomb. Enough said, we have started with the time management lessons involved in getting some or other high tech pleasure in your life. The little device has certainly amazed me with the feedback I as a parent gets from it. I am seeing much joy in future from this, but we as parents will have to manage this carfeully. And no, she does not all of a sudden wants to be a computer specialist, she still wants to be a Veterinary surgeon, just these days she wants to protect the rhinos too. So she wants to be a Vet that helps rhinos. Future iPad or other high tech devise in hand no doubt.

So what does your kids obsess about or do you remember some of your childhood obsessions. I am told that I totally obsessed about stationary and pens etc. This has not changed one bit. I still adore my coloured pens. I only write in colour - black is for those of us who can only think with the left hand side of their brains

  1. Personally I love my black gel ink pens, no bic clic black pens for me. My daughter now way into her twenties still loves her coloured and glitter gel ink pens, a love first encountered while she was still at school.

    1. I am really no fan of gel inks (I know Marcia is a gel ink lover too) - I prefer coloured fine liners with felt tips. I can not draw with gel pens, the fineliners draw better. And how are you doing?

    2. Too right! I love my Pilot 0.7 gel pens in sky blue, pink, dark green and purple. I use the normal blue for work but never black, so much so that I had to get my form for Connor reprinted at the gym because I signed in purple *gasp* :)

I've always been obsessed with stationery - like Lynette says, it's worse now because I can actually afford what I want

  2. I sometimes wish I can remember my children's obsessions...I know that DS2 was always found some hardware...he was a big fan of McGyver.

I am still obsessed with pretty paper, paint, coloured markers etc....the list gets longer, not shorter I am afraid.

  4. I used to buy books all the time as a kid. You know like those empty writing school books. And I would write and write in them.

I wouldn't say my kids right now are overly obsessed about anything in particular and their interests seem a bit on the broad side.

  5. Child 2 is obsessed with wet wipes. They have to go everywhere with him and they are next to the bath when he is in the water. They even go with him to bed. I am the only one who can take one out when I change a nappy and I MUST ask first. The wet-wipes even go with us to church now.
Child 1's current obsession are these comics that he is reading. He got them as a Christmas gift from my cousin. It goes EVERYWHERE with him. I had to forbid him to take it to school!

  8. What a great post and a fantastic slice of life!

At three years old, our girls are all about animals. They love cats above all, which is understandable since we have a furry kitty baby. The funny thing to me is how much they love dogs...they talk about our neighbors' and friends' dogs by name all the time...but they're SCARED of them! ;)

  9. I enjoyed reading about your obsessions!

Right now Ethan is obsessed with the broken broomstick that he magically converts into a kung fu weapon. Zoe is obsessed with Dora the Explorer but hey at least she is learning to speak Spanish. I'm obsessed with everything vintage and I'm particularly looking for an old red suitecase and an old Remington typewriter (just in case you see one for sale) :)

  11. At the moment Nicola is obsessed with dragons and frogs and the vacuum cleaner that she pulls the front end off and either "vacuums" or uses as a sword or a magic wand.

I don't remember anything I was particularly obsessed about. Maybe music? Whenever we had a family gathering my cousins and I would put up a concert and make our parents pay for tickets. If it was at their house we used to rope in all the neighbourhood kids to come play in yhe background band on pots and pans with spoons or with tupperware filled with rice or whatever seemed appropriate. ;-)

  12. My son obsess over animals. He watch National Geographic channel and will come and tell us all about it. He even plays with animal toys. I see that he also loves animal related computer games. So cool.
My daughter obsess over pencils. Everything she does, need a pencil.

  13. My kids are currently obsessed with MY iPad! Before Adam says "hi" when I pick him up, he says "I play a game on your pad?" All 3 fight over it! ugh! Otherwise, Adam loves his Trains. Jacob's a mix of trains and trucks - especially fire trucks. Sarah doesn't have a main obsession right now - she actually has more trouble committing to any one thing for any amount of time.

  14. I don't remember getting obsessed over something when I was a kid, but I do now. I will find out everything thing possible about it. try it out, buy it or what ever and then move on. Scary and can be expensive.

My latest obsession is cake decorating - not baking (that was so last year's obsession) but just the decorating.

Oh yes, and getting a new bicycle! I am on line every second moment looking at the swops and sales.
