Spoiled rotten.

You see, we have Lucy in the house - always cleaning, tidying, doing the washing etc. Occasionally she cooks which is a great help. A lot of the time she does food prep for me - like making mash, peeling veggies etc. And she is available for baby sitting and to look after sick kids at home. Without her I would certainly not be able to work the hours I do. She is my right hand and a part of the family. Now, dear Lucy is in hospital - she had a hysterectomy yesterday and is doing well.

It was preventative surgery, the doctor told me before hand as all the blood tests etc came out clear. Until now, I am pleasantly surprised with the state health system - we expect the worst, I guess that's why. In her yearly check-up at the clinic they found pre-cancer cells and asked her to come 6 months later. With the next pap smear there were more and she was referred to the new hospital here in Pretoria The operation was scheduled and performed yesterday and now we are praying for her speedy recovery.

The thing is that for at the very least, 3 weeks, we will be without her. Up to 6 weeks! At the moment we are still doing well, I think, with keeping things under control, but the weekend was certainly different than what we are used to. Washing and tumble drying (the rainy weather certainly did not help) Luckily Rebecca that used to iron for us is helping out with 2 days this week, and after our holiday once a week. I will take whatever needs to be ironed to the laundromat and she can concentrate on cleaning.

So for the next few weeks, pardon the dust bunnies and our un ironed underwear (Rebecca irons EVERYTHING - kid you not).A note to my kids - please do not get sick right now or for the next 6 weeks.

  2. LOL that's a sign of someone who doesn't have enough work - ironing underwear. V used to do that until I told her if you take the stuff and fold nicely immediately, no ironing is necessary :)

    I feel for you guys!

  3. I hear you! I don't know what we'd do without Xola in our lives - we too are spoilt rotten. She is always available, no matter what. Even when she had her baby 2 years ago, she insisted she only wanted 3 weeks maternity leave. Crazy woman!

Good luck - my thoughts are with you xx

  4. I always have to laugh when my sister (living in SA) complains about being busy! Being busy has a whole new meaning living in the U.S. There is no one here to prepare or prep meals, clean all the bathrooms and vacuum the whole house. Two of her kids were raised by the maid living with them. In the States you have to pay top dollar for any babysitting services and if you pick up your kids 15 minutes late from any school you will pay an additional fee on top of the astronomical childcare costs you have to fork out. I know I'm venting, but most of my family have no idea!

  5. My best bud has just moved to OZ - gosh and is she missing her Martha. But I can imagine. BTW - we also pay fines if you pick kids up late.

  6. Most South African's are spoiled....and agree we do rely so much on a helping hand when we are working mom's. I remember being a housewife and had a live in help...those where the days...
Help costs a fortune these days so not everyone is able to afford this kind of help...

  8. My Grandma used to iron the underwear. I don't iron anything unless it is completely unavoidable.

Yes, you're very lucky to have such reliable household help and I am very jealous! I do hope your Lucy will recover quickly and completely.

  10. How right you are! I go into a flat spin when our Sylvia takes leave - I've actually asked her to give me at least 2 weeks' warning so that I can fully compose and organise myself! Hope she recovers soon!

  11. Oh my goodness...I hope she recovers well and you should get in a "locum"...it is far too much to work all day and clean house and cook at night.

  12. Shame man, I hope she recovers real soon! That's actually quite impressive that they picked up those cells with a regular check - I didn't realise that they looked that thoroughly.
