On friendship. 20 years on.

Friendship is a complex and wonderful concept. It always amazes me how some can survive across continents and time zones and others just dwindle whilst living just around the corner. In February my best friend from school found me on Facebook - it has been 20 years since we have seen each other (and had a fight about the man she was about to marry and is still married to after all these years). We can write off the fight to my preconceptions and own unpreparedness to make any commitment at that age. She was just way more there than me - I was on my own little planet somewhere out in space called Independence. We briefly met each other for coffee with our two daughters at the end of February. It went well and we connected again, but we basically just scratched the surface. On Saturday we met for lunch and the years just peeled away. It was wonderful to see her again and we really talked - about more than just who is where etc. When next we looked at a watch almost 3 hours were gone and we had to leave. It was great, just great.

And my awesome hubby gave me a "mommy's day off" on Saturday - I went to the hairdersser, did some shopping and met my friend. He watched the boys, made sure The Lil Miss got home in time from a friend's the morning and took all 3 to a party in Jo'burg the afternoon. He rocks and I had a really great day. And that really makes my Monday!

  1. It's awesome when you're able to catch up with a friend! I have been a terrible friend lately - I haven't seen most of my friends for over a year as I've been so busy with work and life... I'm turning over a new leaf and will be following your lead in catching up with them soon! xoxo

  3. Friendships are indeed * weird * I have noticed in my own life and with moving away from CT.
There are friends who will forever be my friends, and other who come and go in my life..I cherish them all, no matter what level they happen as I believe people come into your live when you need them...and go when you no longer do...then others are forever!!

  6. Oh, wow. Isn't the internet an amazing thing? Before Facebook, I bet there were a lot fewer reunions like this!

  9. My hubby just turned 42 today. He has been re-discovering his friends and teachers from high school in Islamabad, Pakistan, these past few months through Facebook... who said technology dehumanizes us?

  10. How lovely. Isn't it amazing how the older we get the wiser we get too and how the little things that used to be 'big' really just don't feature anymore?

On Thurs I am going to meet up with with my best friend in Sub B! We haven't seen each other for 30 years so am very very nervous, but excited too!

  12. Wow! Reading your words and story are so similar to something I recently experienced with my friend from HS. I haven't written about our reunion yet because I've struggled to find words to describe the meeting. Surreal continues to be the word that comes to mind.

We enjoyed our time together and like your meeting the hours melted away.

Hugs to you for opening what was once a closed door. Healing old wounds is hard but so good for the soul.

  13. That is incredible! I caught up with one of my best childhood friends a couple years ago - she, too, found me on Facebook! We've gotten together several times and despite YEARS of being apart, we are both amazed how much we still know about each other, just due to us being so close when we were younger. We still remembered each others' childhood phone numbers and everything!

And double Yeah for Hunter giving you the day off!!!

  14. I'm not on Facebook, but will at some point in time like to meet up again with a few friends from school to gossip about everything that happened in the span of almost twenty years!
