The weekend that was.

So have you noticed (or is it just us), that anything in the home, from DIY to cleaning, or anything else takes sooo much longer if you have the kidlets around. Truly, it's a major issue in our home. But regardless, we got a lot done this weekend. And that makes my Monday.

My darling hubby installed pop-up irrigation for the grass areas (we already had in the flower beds) - now most of the garden is so easy to water. Great going hubby!

He also installed an infra red heater in the open plan lounge area - I have been looking for what we refer to as a "Spur" heater, and at last found it. Costs a freaking fortune, but works so well. Does not look so great, but everything has a cozy red glow when it is on and no child can get hurt. We will still place the cord in a less obvious place. Brilliant I tell you. If we later use our gas heater again we can move it to the patio.(for the overseas girls, we do not have central heating in our houses in South Africa and at present we are having the coldest winter in 20 years)

I got us into a higher gear with recycling at home and got these handy containers at Plastic warehouse for R290 for all 3. Taking it to the depot is going to be the harder part of this. And my word, do we use a lot of plastic?

Playing along with Cheryl.

  1. Our plastic bin is also always the fullest! What's up with that - you really notice how much unnecessary packaging there is on stuff once you start recycling...

  2. I love those recycling bins, but I just wish our garbage collection was set up to collect all the rubbish separately

  3. @Margot - although I love Woollies, they are big culprits in terms of packaging.

  4. I know, I know, I know!

We have started to have "shifts" of kid-watching on the weekends to get stuff (chores, not even fun stuff) done.

One watches kids, the other does dishes, cooks, whatever :)

Anyway, LOVE your recycling bins! Do you have Mondi where you live? They collect (for free) in our neck of the woods and it is fantastic. The amount of paper, cardboard, etc. we collect in a week (and I'm virtually paperless) is frightening.

I need to start being good with glass (those purity bottles and I only buy prunes! TMI) :)

  7. Yeah for a productive weekend! We haven't had too many of those lately - been too busy! Need to get in gear though - we want to repaint our living room and need to tear out a wall and re-drywall first!

I like your recycling containers. We have a big bin where it all goes under our kitchen counter. IT fills up fast.

I never even thought about you not having heat! Hope your new heater keeps you toasty warm!

  8. It took me a long time to "get my recycling on"...it feels so good though when I know I am not being wasteful.
    I really love those containers.

  9. That heater is very interesting indeed, never seen one of those ~ not even at the spur :)

When I moved to Germany I had to get into recycling, been over 5 years for me now, whenever I go home I struggle as they don't recycle everything goes into one bin...we like you have lots of different bins but much bigger bins as ours gets collect once or twice a month only.

  11. Every second weekend our lives comes to a stop when DS has his little ones for the weekend...we don't get anything done! That heater looks great...are you allowed to say where you found it?

  14. I love the recycling bins. Don't know that particular heater, but you will sometimes find porch heaters at restaurants when it gets cold for the folks that want to eat outside but don't enjoy the cold food! On the East coast almost all houses have central air of course because the weather would make it unbearable to do without! I did not realize how spoiled we were living in Cape Town until we moved to the US.

  15. You know Cat, when it is SWELTERING here as it is, I often think of you all experiencing opposite seasonal impact. LOVE the warming lights!

And think your recycling bins are so very motivating and festive!

Your many weekend accomplishments Make My Monday. :) Thank you for playing along.

  16. First...I am sorry for the cold winter. I am not a fan of the cold, and it just stinks that you are having to suffer through. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
Second...Really cool recycling bins...we have one for our aluminum, but that is it. We are horrible, but plan to join the recycling fad real soon! The bins are awesome, but I have to ask...are they very big?
Third...can I just say you have a super adorable family! I love your pictures of the kids...SUPER GREAT!!

  17. It's always such a great feeling of accomplishment when jobs like that get checked off the list. I sure do know the feeling, esp. now with twins and a toddler like you! I've taken on the task of going through each room and eliminating/organizing this summer. Everyone thinks I'm crazy, but I NEED to be organized. Finding the time to do it is a challenge, esp. with so many DIY projects we have to do too. But I guess that's how it goes...there will always be projects. Congrats on your success!
