Time flies.

Just three months short of 6 years ago we brought home our precious little Princess. Since then she has grown and developed, sometimes a bit faster than anticipated as she became the older sister of twins at just 33 months of age.

At age 5 she can build 100 piece puzzles almost independently, she ballets and she creates beautiful pottery pieces. She can write her name and anything else you can help her to sound out. She knows all her letters and can do simple addition and subtraction sums. We are so proud of  the girl she has become.

The last month or so it seems as if things have gone into a developmental overdrive. The other day I came downstairs early in the morning to find the 3 eating breakfast of Oaties and milk, taken out of the cupboard and fridge herself and served to her brothers. While camping the long weekend she and Little Man C disappeared, just to come strolling from the ablution block minutes later as she took him to the toilet. She makes a concerted effort to entertain her brothers and help mommy when we are alone. She is a joy to have around.

And yesterday she came home to tell me that she had hit her tooth at school and now it's loose. As the school would in general inform us of a fall and I could see no bruising on her lip or mouth I asked when and how she hit her mouth. She says she can not remember that she did, but that she must have as when she ate her lunch she realized that her bottom right tooth is loose.I felt it, clearly loose but not sore at all. (this was also the very first tooth she cut) My baby is loosing her baby teeth. Sooner than later the tooth mouse (our local version of the tooth fairy) will come visiting. I am sad, nostalgic and a bit teary - she is growing up way too fast.

So a question, how much does the tooth mouse/fairy actually pay for a tooth these days?

She just informed me this morning that the tooth faerie will indeed come for her teeth as girls believe in faeries. Hence the tooth mouse collects boy teeth only. I had no idea....

  1. She's is beautiful!
I think a tooth should be about R20, but then, I am also not in the tooth fairy/mouse loop at the moment :D
Ask Gary the tooth fairy. He is on Facebook ;-)

  2. They do grow up far too fast don't they?

We alos have a tooth fairy, her name is Tinkerbell. My eldest used to write her a letter and then Tinkerbell would leave her a reply. And normally about R10 per tooth i think. Especially the first one - it's a big moment for them!

  5. And so it starts. I would start low with R10 (how many teeth are there - 20? even that is R200!)

She is gorgeous and so sweet to help out her little brothers! I love the cereal - she's playing mommy!

  6. Oh Cat, it's going to be okay... I can say that because it hasn't happened to me yet. I'll be hysterical when Lion gets his first wiggly tooth. That'll be soon, I'd say... he's nearly 6.

I hope your tooth fairy/mouse/creature has good luck with the tooth/cash swap-out when the time comes... I'm dreading that, I think my kid would be just as likely to set a trap to catch the fairy!

  7. Hi Cat - she is so gorgeous...I think R10 or R20 - my children are past tooth fairy age - When Brad had his teeth (4 of them) pulled for braces at about age 12 - he made me fully aware that whilst he did not believe any more, he thought that I should still speak to the tooth fairy and find out what kind of a deal could be made - the tooth fairy forgot for a few nights and eventurally made a turn past with R40-00..Lots of love

  11. I've heard the first tooth goes at a higher price than the rest? Not sure though...

I can tell you a little trick my parents pulled on us when we were going through this: they said that the mouse paid more depending on the condition of the tooth. This did a lot to motivate us into brushing properly.

  12. Really hope I did not cause comment stress, thanks for letting me comment. Now the pressure to say something good! We also have a tooth fairy for a girl and a tooth mouse for a boy. I knitted her a tooth fairy doll which I posted pic of on her blog www.pinklets.wordpress.com
I gave R5 because I like the idea of a coin but I think in hindsight it is very hard to get anything for R5 so the joy of spending it is a little dilluted. I might give a bit more for the next one. Seeing as the doll was part of the gift for the first one.

  16. I'm glad you are finally feeling better from your fall. How scary!

I remember when *I* was a kid that I got 25 cents US per tooth. I think times have changed though!
