You know it's almost Christmas...

.... when you hear the dance of the Sugar Plum fairy and you see the posters for this year's production of the Nutcracker. We have never gone until this year, because this year our favorite Youth Dance Company  Tshwane's yearly ballet was the Nutcracker. After we enjoyed their Sleeping Beauty in 2010 and Cinderella last year, we were all ready to go for this year's special dress up party show on Saturday morning. This year she opted to dress as the Sugar Plum faerie. It was truly a lovely show with such talented dancers. Almost all the dancers are children and teenagers and I am every year astounded at how professional these youngsters are - I asked around and got the ages of some of them - truly fantastic. Apart from some guest dancers for the production (as the Prince and Cossack for instance), Nigel Hannah was as always a treat. The Princess recognizes him every year and every year he signs her programme and has a smile and a chat with the kids. I would truly recommend this for your kids - and I promise next year I will give a timely shout out so that you can book for this. A great way to introduce kids to ballet and inspire young ballerinas.

Naughty me - sneaking in a picture but I have to show you how pretty everything was.
Incredible detail on the Sugar Plum Faerie's tutu
So who is joining in next year? And have you taken your kids to the ballet as yet? Or the yearly Pantomine?
Now I can not wait to go to The Little Mermaid with my kids in December. It will be the boys' first big theatre experience.

  1. Ah...these are BEAUTIFUL. I have never taken my kids to a theatre production. I am way too afraid! They can barely cope with carols by candle light! They have both gone with their schools though. It's on the to-do list for 2013.

  2. Oh how beautiful! We loved going to the productions, but got out of the habit as the girls got older. You've inspired me to go again! :)

  3. I love it that the little girls all went dressed in theme...sometimes I wish we lived in a City where we can see fantastic shows like this.

  4. Love that you stole a quick photo to show us. It's very colorful and beautiful.
Incredible how that 18 year old ballerina danced while she is busy with final exams. Just shows the discipline.
Your daughter is doing so well in her ballet and I hope mine will also.

  5. That looks fantastic! I haven't taken Nicola to something like this yet, but I think she might be a little bit too young to sit still for so long. Maybe next year? At what age did you start taking the princess?

    1. She was 5 Louisa - a good age. There were really small kids who seemed ok though

I took Mieka to a ballet end-of-year concert this year. She also enjoyed it tremendously.

  7. Those pictures are so beautiful. :) I would love to take my daughter to see a ballet as she loves ballerinas, but I think she's still a little to young to sit through it.

  8. I remember taking my sister when she was little... the only pity about having 2 boys!
Looks like it was such a special day!

  9. Beautiful!! I took Sarah to The Nutcracker last winter but we didn't make it this year. I'm kind of sad we didn't fit it in but I promised her next year we'd go again. She's still doing dance herself so that in itself is exciting!
