Gosh people!

At 4:33 yesterday morning I wake up with "bing bong" - Whatsapp notification. Followed within seconds by another one. Guess who it was? A mom on the under 9 rugby group (and a wonderful great mom - one of our "village")- adding to a conversation on something that takes place this coming Saturday. The worst is that another mom answered. By 5:10 am there were 6 messages from 6 parents! Needless to say - my phone will be on silent in the future because sleep escaped both Hunter and I for the rest of the morning.

My question is - do you not even consider that some parents are still asleep? Yes I know there are "Do not disturb" functions but we have elderly parents - that is not an option. Have we become a generation where there is no consideration and privacy for sleep and we have to be available 24 hours of the day? A roster for duty at a food stal was posted at 5:05 and revised by 5:37 - when I would generally still be in dream land. And feedback was requested. Gosh people!

Of course I am wondering if I get up too late? What are you supposed to do at 4:30 that I am not doing? Exercising comes to mind...  I usually get up at 5:45 but we do live very close to school and work.

So honestly - at what time do you wake up? And would you randomly Whatsapp to a group at 4:33am? Am I old fashioned to think it is maybe a bit inconsiderate?

  1. Totally inconsiderate. We used to live in a world where only emergency calls could be made after 9 and before 6. Now I get work messages at 3 am or Mom group messages at 4. I hate it as I am light sleeper. Possibly a new generation.

  2. Definitely! We get up at 5, but it's way too early for us and I usually only wake up at 10, after 3 hours in the office already. ;-)
I always get a fright with those early notifications, especially at 12 when someone heard something in our complex! *yawn*

  4. I get up at 6.45 or 6.30 (naturally) IF I get to bed before 11. But my phone is always, ALWAYS on silent. So nothing disturbs me although the bzzz of the notifications sometimes do. However, my new thing which I will blog on OQ is my phone now lives outside my bedroom - best thing ever!

  5. I promise I'm not laughing AT you...but this is funny to me. :) I am an oddball in my world, I think, in that I get up between 4:30 and 5:00. That's MY quiet time, before the rest of the house gets up.

I do try to be very careful of sending correspondence before 6:30 or so, though. I would hate to be the text message person who woke someone up!!!

  6. My phone is on vibrate 99% of the time. And no message notification because I find it quite rude and disturbing to have notifications going off at all hours of the day when I work in an open plan office. There should be rules (spoken of course so everyone is on the same page) like no posting before 6am and after 9pm. Sounds childish but if people think it is appropriate to send messages at 4am then rules are required :(

  7. My phone goes on silent from 20:00 till 07:00, and I don't said messages before 07:00; there is a time and a place for everything.

  8. It is selfish to message or call out of normal hours. I find it annoying too. Fortunately my what's app only notifies me of messages when I open it, which can also be a problem

  9. I've muted all the whatsapp groups that I have to be on. So about twice a day I would look at them and scan to see if there is anything important.

We really do need a "Tannie Emsie" to teach us the etiquette of this new world and technology. I want to pull all my hair out of my head when they start with the "lekker daggie vir julle almal" and then next one "lekkerder daggietjie vir jou" and so it goes on and on and on. Use the group for the purpose it was created for it.

    Oops sorry - soap box.

    1. We are actually doing very well on that front - so well that people really only answer if asked to. It's sort of a rule in our school and gets taken very seriously. So there's no cute photos and lekker daggies on the groups. This was an important message - it's just the timing.

  10. I get up at 4...but I wouldn't dream of sending anyone a message before 7 at least.

You can mute specific WA groups for an entire year. I've had to do that with one or two groups. They have a bad habit of doing a 30 or more message flurry, usually when I'm in a meeting and trying to focus.

    1. I know - but in general this is not a group that is an issue

  11. Oh this post touched a cord!!! My granny always used to say beware of phone calls early in the morning, on the hour... obviously someone has waited till "on the hour" to call you. Anyway, we are never up at 4 or 5 or 6 or 7 and our early birds start to rise about 8... and by 9 we are sitting at the table doing school. Our kids used to go to bed really early but then my hubs changed his work hours and our kids never ever saw him... so they started going to bed later, so that we could have dinner together. Our kids do go to bed later, but they sleep a lot later than most folk. What drives me nuts is folk that phone us at 6 in the morning, or worse stop by at se7en on the way to school... because they knew we would be up because we have kids. No we aren't up and yes you did just wake the whole family and whatever you have to say is not that important!!! We sleep with all the phones on silent, and never in our room, just no buzzing thank you very much. I used to keep my phone on in case my elderly parents called, but nothing not even the greatest emergency will get them to call us... so now mid morning I give them a call and check that they are ok... that works for us. I think people live in a computer driven world and expect an instant response... well I'm not a computer!!!

  12. I am up early! But I don't reply to messages early unless I know the person is awake.
My challenge is I go to bed early so I get a lot of messages after I am asleep but I always have my phone on silent so its not a huge issue.
